Movies 101 at NYU
Each week, students preview a new movie before it opens, without preconceptions generated by reviewers, critics or "experts." Professor Brown introduces each film, describing its creation, as well as providing a historical context. At the conclusion, Professor Brown interviews the director or star or, frequently, both. Through his lectures, each film becomes an illustration of how diverse elements combine to create the narrative thread. His lectures strike the keynote for the course: to provide every student with a rich understanding of how they personally experience motion pictures, and why, in the end, great filmmaking is in fact, great storytelling.
